Ultralight Fishing Lures

There are different categories of lures that are used in lure fishing. The ones that we usually used fall into either one of these groups: crankbaits, spinners, jigs, and poppers.

Crankbaits

The crankbaits, which are sometimes called jerkbaits, seem to be the most effective lure in any setting. The distinct feature of crankbait, as opposed to others, is that they are made to be used for a certain depth. The depth to which crankbaits dive depends on the shape of the lip. Crankbaits are one of the lures that are recommended for beginners.

Spinners

Spinnerbaits attract bites with the noise and the flash that they make. Spinners usually consist of single or dual blades that flash while being retrieved. They are especially effective for use in shallow and murky waters. To enhance the effectiveness of the spinner, the color must be matched with the vegetation of baitfish in the area.

Jigs

Jigging lures are made of lead and are meant to be used by using a jigging motion for retrieval. Unlike crankbaits and spinners, which are used in a horizontal motion, it is intended to attract fish by its vertical motion. Using jigs require a steeper learning curve. Being made of lead, which naturally sinks, there is always a chance of getting snagged on the rocks or structures underwater so use them with caution.

Poppers

Poppers are easily distinguished from other types of lures because of their cupped mouth. The mouth is designed to scoop and push a surge of water to attract bites. The sound of water that it makes it made to imitate either a scaping baitfish or a feeding predator. The poppers also require some practice to master and may also require a specialized type of fishing rod. It is more effective when the water surface is calm.

First Things First: What is Ultralight Fishing?

So you might have seen your friends post photos or videos like the one above, of their fishing adventures and you want to post one for yourself too. However, you are confused about how to start your fishing adventures. Well, you have come to the right place as we will study the very basic level of fishing art here. We will study ultralight fishing, the gears, the how-tos, and some tips and tricks that will make your ultralight fishing adventure more enjoyable.

Ultralight Fishing Defined
There are a lot of different ways that people define ultralight fishing. For this site, we will just confine ourselves in one simple rule. Our rule is: we will use lures that measure only up to 7 grams or 1/4 ounce and that is it. All other gears must be partnered with this rule.

The Gears
Lure fishing, in general, requires these four basic equipment: rod, reel, lines, and lure. Let us talk about each one of these in detail.

  • Fishing Rod. Fishing rods come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There are spinning rods, jigging rods, casting rods, and popper rods. Here, we will be using spinning rods.
  • Fishing Reel. Since we are using ultralight equipment, we will be using small spinning reels.
  • Line. Ultralight fishing uses two types of lines: braided line and monofilament line. The braided line is used as the mainline and the monofilament is used at the end of the mainline to connect to the lure.
  • Lures. There is a variety of lures that can be used for ultralight fishing. Lures fall in the following categories: jigs, swimbaits, jerk baits, and bucktails. The type of lure must be matched with the target species of fish and the surroundings.
  • Optional Tackles and Equipment. Swivels, snaps, pliers, rod holders, and snips may also be needed in different situations.

Ultralight fishing can be a great starting point for the hobby of fishing. You can learn in small steps using small gears and also smaller game fish. As you become familiar with the techniques and gears, you may be able to level up to other levels of fishing.
