We will study ultralight fishing, the gears, the how-tos, and some tips and tricks that will make your ultralight fishing adventure more enjoyable.
Ultralight Fishing Defined
There are a lot of different ways that people define ultralight fishing. For this site, we will just confine ourselves in one simple rule. Our rule is: we will use lures that measure only up to 7 grams or 1/4 ounce and that is it. All other gears must be partnered with this rule.
The Gears
Lure fishing, in general, requires these four basic equipment: rod, reel, lines, and lure. Let us talk about each one of these in detail.
- Fishing Rod. Fishing rods come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There are spinning rods, jigging rods, casting rods, and popper rods. Here, we will be using spinning rods.
- Fishing Reel. Since we are using ultralight equipment, we will be using small spinning reels.
- Line. Ultralight fishing uses two types of lines: braided line and monofilament line. The braided line is used as the mainline and the monofilament is used at the end of the mainline to connect to the lure.
- Lures. There is a variety of lures that can be used for ultralight fishing. Lures fall in the following categories: jigs, swimbaits, jerk baits, and bucktails. The type of lure must be matched with the target species of fish and the surroundings.
- Optional Tackles and Equipment. Swivels, snaps, pliers, rod holders, and snips may also be needed in different situations.
Ultralight fishing can be a great starting point for the hobby of fishing. You can learn in small steps using small gears and also smaller game fish. As you become familiar with the techniques and gears, you may be able to level up to other levels of fishing.
